A man revered in running circles around Manitoba has died at the age of 63. Chris McCubbins lost his battle with cancer on Aug. 21.

McCubbins was widely regarded as one of the greatest cross-country runners in Canadian history, but he also had success on the track.

He competed in the 10,000m at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, and still holds the Manitoba record for the distance at 28:16.

McCubbins was also an avid cross-country skier and helped develop many of the trails in Winnipeg.

There are plans to rename the Manitoba cross-country championships after McCubbins.
