The fastest marathon in the world goes off on Sunday (Sept. 24) in the German capital.

Beginning at 3:15 a.m. EDT, the Berlin Marathon, the fourth of the calendar year’s Abbott World Marathon Majors, features some of the top marathoners in the world. The men’s race is considered to be a world record attempt as Kenenisa Bekele, Wilson Kipsang and Eliud Kipchoge go head-to-head.

Both Kipchoge and Kipsang have incredible consistency. Kipchoge has won eight of the nine marathons he’s ever run and Kipsang has run the most sub-2:04 marathons in history. Bekele, on the other hand, has the greatest range as he’s the world record holder over 5,000m and 10,000m and has run 2:03:03. All three of these runners have also won before in Berlin.

Bekele won Berlin in 2016, in the second fastest record-eligible time in history, with Kipsang, a former world record holder in the marathon, in second. Kipchoge is the 2016 Olympic marathon champion.

In the women’s race, six athletes have broken 2:24 in the marathon including the fastest runner in the field, 2015 Berlin Marathon champion Gladys Cherono, who has a 2:19:25 to her name. Meanwhile, Aberu Kebede is a triple Berlin winner, triumphing in 2010, 2012 and 2016.

Berlin is arguably the fastest record-eligible race in the world. The previous six men’s world records have been set on the pancake-flat course that tours Berlin with a start and finish line area in the Tiergarten near the Brandenburg Gate.

Canadians are in luck if they want to stream coverage. CBC Sports will have live streaming coverage of the full event at cbcsports.ca and via the CBC Sports app beginning Sunday at 3:15 a.m. EDT (12:15 a.m. PDT).
