Record numbers at the third annual Edmonton Pride Run
Participation has doubled at the Edmonton Pride Run since the inaugural event in 2015
The Edmonton Pride Run, which first began in 2015, had a record year nearly doubling its participation from the inaugural event.
The June 11 sold-out event featured 600 participants, up from 366 in 2015, with two added distances for 2017, a 3K walk to make racing “more accessible” and a 10K for an added “challenge,” according to race organizers. Joshua Bergman and Kent Akgungor co-founded the event in 2015 to “promote diversity of the Lesbian—Gay—Bisexual—Trans-identified—Two-spirit—Queer (LGBTQ) community and its allies.”

The Edmonton Pride Run took place during the Edmonton Pride Festival, which includes the parade. Rachel Notley, the Premier of Alberta, and Randy Boissonnault, the MP for Edmonton Centre, were among the names in attendance for the Pride Festival. This year, the run, which included 3K, 5K and 10K distances, moved to a new location at Argyll Park and ran through Mill Creek Ravine.
