Runners splash through knee-deep water at Canada Day Road Races finish
An unavoidable pool of water near the end of the Canada Day Road Races in Ottawa made for some memorable finishing sprints
Early risers on Canada Day in Ottawa had to overcome more than just tired legs shortly before the Canada Day Road Races finish line.
Following a downpour that lasted until the start of the 10K on Saturday morning, a large, unavoidable pool of water developed with levels reaching some runners’ knees. (Rain was on and off all morning.) The splashes made for some memorable race photos and, in at least one instance, a tumble.

The rain was perhaps at its heaviest minutes before the 10K went off shortly after 8 a.m. leaving runners soaked on the start line. Conditions were relatively warm and humid so a bit of wetness may have been a welcome sight for some at the sold-out race. To celebrate Canada 150, runners received a red and white race shirt as well as a sweet race medal.

Run Ottawa, the organizers of Ottawa Race Weekend, hosted the 31st annual Canada Day Road Races in Kanata, a large suburb southwest of the downtown core. The morning kicked off with a 10K followed shortly by a 5K. There was also a 1K kids run and a 100m trot run as runners of all abilities kicked off Canada 150 with a visit to the races.
