3 Canadian road ultras (for those who want to go farther)

Ultrarunning (i.e, racing farther than the marathon distance) space has become a fast-growing segment of the North America running scene, and many, if not most ultramarathon races are on trails. But not every ultra-curious runner is ready to move from the road to the trails. The good news is that you don’t need to: there are a handful of Canadian road ultramarathons that give you the chance to move up in distance while still running on familiar road or packed gravel surfaces. Here is a roundup of races across the country you can still sign up for.

Calgary Marathon 60K (this year only!)

Those looking for a western Canada road ultra are in luck this year: in celebration of its 60th anniversary, the Calgary Marathon is offering a 60K option. We’re now just weeks away from this one, so any marathoners seeking an opportunity to race a unique distance should consider signing up now.

Niagara Ultra

Taking place in mid-June, this race offers shorter distances as well, but the 50K and 80K ultramarathons take place on the same paved bike path alongside the Niagara Parkway. As an out-and-back course with repeated laps as the distances go up, it’s well supported and very spectator-friendly. It’s also flat, so if you’re aiming for your fastest time across either of those distances, this race is a good one.

Harriers Elk-Beaver Ultras

This Victoria-based race isn’t on the roads, but the fast and flat 10-km loop around Elk and Beaver Lakes is packed gravel, making this about as close to road running as you’ll find. This year’s race is May 11, so while it’s likely too soon for many this year, it’s a great one to keep on your radar for a “similar-to-road” ultra in the future.
