Another year of strange results from Mexico City Marathon

There were 2,000 alleged cheaters at this year's Mexico City Marathon

In both 2017 and 2018, there were reports of mass cheating from the Mexico City Marathon. Between the two events, there were an estimated 10,000 incidents of disqualification. The marathon ran its 2019 race on Sunday and while disqualification numbers appear to be lower than in previous years, there remain roughly 2,000 incidents of alleged cheating.

Marathon Investigation reports that 2,000 runners were removed from the complete results by Monday evening.

2018 was the year of the “O” medal. Since 2013, the official finisher’s medal has been in the shape of a letter. In 2013, it was “M” with the next year being “E” followed by “X” and then “I”, and then “C”. The letters of the finishers medals eventually spelled Mexico, with 2018 being the final letter.

It was hoped that in 2019, cheating rates would decrease significantly, since the “Mexico” series of medals was complete. But the race has reportedly launched a new medal line with the 2019 medals, and following five years of medals, forming a map of the city.

The women’s course record was broken at the 37th running of the marathon on Sunday. Vivian Kiplagat of Kenya set a new record at 2:33:27, taking three minutes off the old mark. In the men’s race, Kenyan Duncan Maiyo took the title in 2:12:50.
