In a story similar to that of Forrest Gump, a U.S. runner completed the 4,800-kilometre trek across the country accomplishing the feat entirely barefoot.

Jake Brown, nicknamed “Barefoot Jake Brown,” began the journey on Mar. 5 in Huntington Beach, Calif. and finished the run on Oct. 31 in New York City, becoming the first to do so barefoot according to Brown. He averaged over 30K per day.

Brown, 28, completed the last 24-kilometre leg from Manhattan to Jacob Riis Park in Queens on Halloween and topped it off by running the TCS New York City Marathon on Nov. 1, just a day after completing the trek across the U.S.

The barefoot runner carried camping gear and food in a backpack and spent most nights sleeping under the stars. Brown tracked his progress with Charity Miles, an app that allows users to raise money for charity when walking, running or biking.

According to Brown, the run was done “to inspire others to support charitable causes and live purposefully.”
