Boston bombing survivor to race the marathon with prosthetic leg

Adrianne Haslet-Davis lost her leg in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and this year, she’s returning to the race course for the 120th running to line up with a bib number. She’s going to run the 42.2K on April 18 with her prosthetic leg.

In 2013, Haslet-Davis was in the crowd at the Boston Marathon and was caught in the second blast, leaving her severely wounded. She suffered shrapnel wounds to her right leg and had to have her left leg amputated below the knee.

Haslet-Davis is a professional ballroom dancer. Prior to the Boston bombings, she was third in the world in her ranking. But after losing her left leg, everything changed. She had to make a new start, learning how to walk again. It was three or four months after getting her prosthetic leg before she was able to get back onto the dance floor. But she has managed to come back to dance. Last year, Haslet-Davis went back to the Boston Marathon to go back to the spot where the traumatic incident happened and ballroom dance across the finish.

And this year, Haslet-Davis will be running the marathon with a team under the name #AdrianneStrong. The group will be running together on April 18 to raise funds for Limbs for Life Foundation. Haslet-Davis was not a runner prior to this training. While she decided to take on this challenge awhile ago, she only made the announcement was becoming more confident with her progress in running.

“I wanted to train and really see if I was ready this year both physically and mentally before announcing that I’ve been training,” she recently told boston.com.

Training has been going well though. She wears a running blade when training (see photos) and is currently up to 10 miles.
