The streets of Boston saw quite the race yesterday as runners came together to compete in the 120th running of North America’s most iconic race. Three years after the city was shaken by the tragic 2013 bombings on the race course, two survivors who lost limbs in the attacks returned to run the race.

Patrick Downes lost his left leg in 2013 as he was standing in the crowd as a spectator watching his wife complete the course. Yesterday, he became the first Boston bombing person with an amputation to run the course. He ran a 5:56:46 marathon and crossing the finish line at 2:46 p.m. Monday afternoon. Downes is 32 years old.

Behind him on the course was ballroom dancer Adrianne Haslet-Davis. Haslet-Davis also lost a leg in 2013 thanks to the bombings. Yesterday was the first time she returned to Boston to participate in the actual race however last year, she showed up on the scene to perform a dance on the finish line.
