How are you celebrating New Year’s Eve in Canada?

For some runners and walkers, the celebrations will either begin or end with a fitness challenge as there will be New Year’s races across the country on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. Some events have become an annual traditions for runners and walkers, like the Hair of the Dog Fun Run in Toronto which has been taking place for more than 35 years.

Below are a selection of races across the country on either New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day as runners bring in 2017 with some running attire. Wherever you’re celebrating, have a safe weekend.

Hair of the Dog Fun Run

Jan. 1, Toronto – 11:30 a.m. / noon

The 9K or 3K fun runs are held on New Year’s Day at Balmy Beach Canoe Club in Toronto. A hot lunch follows for those looking to warm up following the 37th annual running of the event that has become a tradition for Torontonians.

Resolution Run

More than 45 locations across Canada – Dates and times vary

The largest of the New Year’s races, the Resolution Run is held across Canada in the hours leading up to the calendar turning over. Entry to the event comes with a jacket. Some cities, like Toronto and Montreal, held resolution runs on earlier dates. The event is not timed.

New Year’s Eve 5K

Dec. 31, New Glasgow, N.S. – 6 p.m.

This sold-out event begins at 6 p.m. local time following a fireworks show. Each participant gets a glow stick to wear during the run or walk as well as a non-alcoholic refreshment to toast for the New Year’s celebration. The event, which is free and not timed, is capped at 200 participants.

Polar Bear Walk or Run

Jan. 1, Peachland, B.C. – 10 a.m.

The 2K walk or a 5K run is held 10 hours into 2017 in the Okanagan Valley along the waterfront in Peachland. Saturday is the final day to sign up online though on-site registration (cash only) is also available.

Midnight Run Toronto

Dec. 31, Toronto – 11:59 p.m.

This Toronto run begins at the stroke of midnight and is followed by a post-race party. The event is held in Liberty Village close to downtown Toronto. Each participant also gets a glass of champagne in line with the New Year’s celebration.
