A tough day in the Big Apple for Canada's marathon record holder

It was not the New York Marathon debut Canada’s marathon record holder Cam Levins hoped for. The 34-year-old from Vancouver Island dropped out of the race near the 20K mark in Brooklyn.

“I am not injured or anything,” Levins wrote on social media.”I just felt really crummy from the start and things didn’t improve. I will take some time to rest and reevaluate training then get back and be better!”

Coming into the race with a 2:05 personal best, Levins was one of the favourites to win the marathon. He was in the mix for the lead through the first 15 km, sitting in the top eight before stepping off the course around 20K.

Levins arrived in NYC with the ambitious goal of becoming the first Canadian to win the race and to leverage the hilly course as part of his preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
