Around the Bay throwback Hamilton’s Around the Bay 30K race is set for this Sunday, April 3 and many Canadians who are running will be excited to take part in Canada’s oldest race. It’s also one of the most iconic featuring many hilly sections and, perhaps one of the more brag-worthy points: it’s older than Boston.

How old? The first edition ran in 1894. It hasn’t run every consecutive year thanks to directors giving it a miss during world war years. It has however run for a total of 106 times.

This year, runners take part in the 30K, 5K or relay.

For this week’s throwback, we’re taking a look at a moment shot by Canadian race photographer George Aitkin.

The shot above was taken in the 1983 edition of the race. Leading the pack in running wear easily recognizable from this decade is Dave Reid who had just turned 20 that year. He is pacing his friend Mike Dyon who is running in second place.

According to Aitkin, following them is Paul Bannon, Mark Orzell, Al Baigent and Ken Hawthorne.

It seems like Reid did his job as a pacer– he led his friend Dyon to victory. Dyon won in 1:34:15. It was his third of three Around the Bay victories.

Can you caption this photo? We’re turning this week’s throwback into a contest among our readers. Write a caption for this photo, share it on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using our handle (@CanadianRunning) and the hashtag #CanadianRunning.

The winner will win a copy of First Ladies of Running by Amby Burfoot. Flip through the pages for your dose of running nostalgia from female pioneers of the sport.
