Female shooter arrested near San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon course

No runners injured during incident, which shut down the course for several minutes

58-year-old Mona Elease Williams was arrested in San Diego Sunday after a shooting incident during the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon.

No one was injured in the incident, other than a police officer who accidentally shot himself in the leg, but several thousand runners were forced to stop and make a detour into a designated safe zone before finishing the race.

The incident began at 10:45 a.m., four and a half hours after the start of the marathon, when police received a 911 call about a hit and run in the Core-Columbia neighbourhood. According to a press release from the San Diego Police Department, the victim flagged an officer after making the call, who followed Williams’ vehicle into a parking garage, where she threatened him with a gun.

The officer then suspect drove to the top level of the garage, where Williams emerged from the car brandishing the weapon. Another officer who had responded to the first officer’s call for backup fired on the suspect, but missed. Williams eventually threw the gun to the ground below and surrendered to police.

About 4,900 runners were still on the course at the time and were forced to make a detour onto the grounds of San Diego City College while officers dealt with the incident. No runners were injured.
