Norwegian phenom and reigning Olympic 1,500m champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen has once again rewritten the record books, etching his name alongside some of the greatest distance runners in history. On Friday night at the Paris Diamond League, Ingebrigtsen shattered Daniel Komen’s long-standing two-mile world record of 7:58.61 by nearly four seconds, crossing the finish in a staggering 7:54.10.

Heading into the race, it was clear that Ingebrigtsen was in shape and ready to give the 26-year-old record a shot. Ingebrigtsen’s pace was relentless from the start, hitting the one-mile mark in around 3:57 with his Kenyan pacer Kyumbe Munguti. When the pacer dropped off at 2,000m, the 22-year-old took over and chipped away at each lap, inching closer to history.

The crowd erupted as Ingebrigtsen approached his final lap on record pace, sprinting down the final straight and reaching the line four seconds clear of Komen’s record. Although Ingebrigtsen has many European and national distance records to his name, this is his first outdoor world record mark, adding to his 1,500m indoor world record from 2022.

Ingebrigtsen’s record-breaking run at the Paris Diamond League cements his status as one of the all-time greats in middle-distance running. At only 22, he has already achieved multiple world records, Olympic and world titles. Last year at the Diamond League final in Zurich, he said he aspires to be the greatest distance runner in history; he plans to give the marathon a shot after the 2024 Paris Olympics.
