Johnny Miles Marathon produces amazing and close finish
Despite racing 42.2K on Sunday, it took only a fraction of a second to separate the top two finishers of the Johnny Miles Marathon in New Glasgow, N.S.
Ray Moorehead, 52, and Scott Clark, 51, were the first to finish the race, sharing a time of 2:50:13. Their official separation according to chip timing was three-hundredths of a second, with Moorehead taking the very slight advantage.
After their mad dash to the finish, both runners collapsed to the ground, later stating it was the hardest marathon they had ever run. Moorehead insisted that both he and Clark had put forth an equal effort and it would only be fair to share top honours. Race officials shared the sentiment and have officially declared the result a tie, the first and only case in the event’s 40-year history.
The two have previously finished close together. Last October, Moorehead beat Clark by just one second to finish fourth at the Prince Edward Island Marathon in Charlottetown.
Moorehead hails from Hubley, N.S., while Clark calls Summerside, P.E.I. home. The two age-group rivals expect to be close in a race again soon.
