Mississauga Marathon features full weekend of fast and fun running

In addition to the BMO Vancouver and Goodlife Fitness Toronto Marathon events that took place this past weekend, the Mississauga Marathon races also welcomed some 5,000 participants to seven unique races that ran Saturday and Sunday, May 6th and 7th.

The action got underway on Saturday afternoon with the MNP 10K, the 10K student relay and the “Hazel” 5K, so named after Hazel McCallion, Mississauga’s former mayor of 36 years.

Sergio Raez Villanueva of Mississauga was the winner of the men’s 10K in a time of 30:17. Tanis Bolton was the first female (and 9th overall) in 36:20. In the 5K, local Dylan Alick was the first male to finish in 16:20. Catherine Rodriguez of Brampton was the first female finisher in 19:46. In total, some 2,500 runners and walkers took part in Saturday’s races.

The signature marathon, as well as the marathon relay and half, took place starting at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. Participants faced cool single digit temperatures, overcast skies and swirling and at-times intense winds from the north. Mississauga is a popular event for those chasing PBs and BQs and is known for its fast, net downhill courses which start at Celebration Square and wind their way down towards the finish at Lakefront Promenade Park on Lake Ontario’s waterfront.
