Ontario Masters meet highlights benefits of activity at all ages

The 47th annual Ontario Masters Championships ran this weekend, July 28-29, from York Lions Stadium in Toronto

The field was packed for the mixed 100m dash at the Ontario Masters Athletics Championships at Toronto’s York University this weekend. Seventy-four runners participated, with Alex Helman, 24, (10.80 seconds), Mellard Brown, 34, (11.12) and Michael James, 38, (11.19) taking the podium. Jordanne Williams, 28, was the first woman, in 12:44, Lorena Reyes, 35, of Ultimate Body, was second, in 13:18, and Khama Beckles, 43, of Project Athletic, was third, in 13:24.

The doyen of the competition, from the point of view of age, was Steffan Kampe, 81. Kampe also participated in the mixed 5,000m, the mixed 1,500m, and the mixed 400m dash.

The 5,000m also featured six septuagenarians, with Richard Bailey, 70, of the Longboat Roadrunners placing fifth in his section and tenth overall, with a time of 21:45. Bailey’s age-graded result is 16:16, or 77.51 per cent.

Canadian Running Magazine’s Dan Way, 31, was first in the 5,000m, with a time of 16:09. Kevin Smith, 48, was second, in 16:49, and Laszlo Orosz, 50, third, in 16:51.

Krista Allen, 38, of the Newmarket Huskies, was the first woman and fourth overall in the 5K, with a new PB of 18:25. Amy Ballon, 47, of the University of Toronto Track Club was second, in 19:19, and Elaine Mota, 52, of the Newmarket Huskies, was third, in 19:28.
