Ottawa sprinter breaks Canadian 300m record

Ottawa's Lauren Gale broke a Canadian record that was set the same year she was born

On Saturday at the Louis Riel Dome in Ottawa, Lauren Gale set the first Canadian outdoor record of the 2024 season, in the women’s 300 metres.

Gale, who grew up in the Ottawa area and now competes for the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club, won the 300m race at the Carleton Ravens U Sports Last Chance meet in 36.48 seconds. It ranks as the sixth-fastest 300m mark in the world this year and shaved 0.16 seconds from the previous record set in 2000, the year Gale was born.

While Gale’s time of 36.48 seconds was set indoors at the Louis Riel Dome, it will not count as a Canadian indoor record, due to the oversized length of the Dome’s track (400m); instead, it will be recognized as a Canadian outdoor record. Her time was also faster than the current Canadian indoor record of 36.94 set by Kyra Constantine in 2022, but that record will still stand since indoor records have to be run on a 200m track

Ladonna Antoine previously held the national record over 300 metres outdoors, with a time of 36.64 seconds, set in Brisbane, Australia, during a tune-up meet for the Sydney Olympics.

This marks the fourth time the 24-year-old has set a Canadian sprint record. She also holds records for the 200m indoors and was part of the Canadian 4x400m relay team, which set a national record at the 2022 World Indoor Championships in Serbia.
