Do you ever wonder how you could make more of a difference in kids’ lives? In May, the Million Reasons Run, a fundraiser for 13 children’s hospitals across Canada, will return for its third year, and anyone can sign up, anywhere in the world. This virtual running challenge, which started in 2021, has raised more than $3.5 million so far, and this year’s event represents a chance to add significantly to that figure.

How does it work?

The Million Reasons Run is entirely virtual, and lasts the entire month of May, so participants can complete the challenge wherever and whenever they want. There is no set distance, and instead of saying you’ll run a 5K, a 10K, a marathon or any other distance on a specific day and be done with the challenge, you can dedicate your entire month of running to the event. All you need to do is sign up on the Million Reasons Run website, where you’ll be prompted to set your own personal mileage goal.

Whether you think you can run 30K or 300K in the month of May, your mileage will count for a good cause as you show your support and raise awareness (and money) for Canadian children’s hospitals. As noted on the Million Reasons Run website, you can track your kilometres however you like, whether that’s on Strava, MapMyRun or another fitness app.

If you’re new to running and want to participate, but don’t know how to get started in training, don’t worry, the event has got you covered. Canadian Olympian Malindi Elmore has designed three training plans, with a beginner schedule, an “advanced” plan and even one for kids. With all of that help, there’s really no reason not to join the Million Reasons Run.

Fundraising

All donations will be received by SickKids Foundation. From there, the funds will be allocated to the 12 other hospital foundations across the country. When you sign up for the event, you’ll be asked to select your local children’s hospital (or whichever is closest to you). Any fundraising you do will be sent to that hospital. While the event was created to be a fundraiser, organizers don’t want to exclude anyone who cannot donate or raise money for the cause. Anyone willing to run for the hospitals for the month of May is more than welcome and encouraged to sign up, whether they plan to fundraise or not.
