Throwback Thursday: Where are they now?

For our Thursday Throwback we are looking back on a 1992 race on the track. Where is this athlete now?

George Aitkin-Apr.21

Spring is here and with it comes outdoor track season. This week, Cambridge, Ont. running photographer George Aitkin is taking a look back at a moment during the 1992 Canadian junior track championships. What’s going on in his photo?

Canadian Running: Why did you select this photo and tell us the details about what’s going on.

George Aitkin: I chose this photo for this week since outdoor track is getting underway now. This photo is from the 1992 Canadian junior track and field championships in Winnipeg. Eventual winner Kathy Butler from Waterloo is leading the field here in the 3000m.

CR: What were the results?

GA: Patrice Kuntz, number 456, was second in 9:53, and Sunshine Wilson (295 just behind Kuntz was third in 10:02. Saskatchewan’s Kathy Rung is number 195 and she placed 10th.

CR: Do you know where any of these athletes are now?

GA: Kathy is now an IAAF qualified coach who lives in Colorado. She ran 9:38 that day. I trained a bit with Kathy Butler at the Tri City Track Club in Waterloo back in the 1990’s and I am still in touch with her via Facebook now. Nationals is always exciting and the junior athletes always had potential scholarships to think about.

CR: What else do you remember from this?

GA: It was my third flight out west that year so I was busy with both photography and my own competitions. I can’t remember many other details off hand.
