Running with pride on a historic day in Toronto
The Toronto pride run, which featured an appearance from the Ontario premier, took place on Saturday ahead of Toronto's pride parade.

Downtown Toronto was packed on Sunday for the annual Toronto pride parade as people filled the streets for one of summer’s biggest events. Runners began the weekend with the Toronto Pride and Remembrance run on Saturday to celebrate the LGBTQ community before the parade got underway.
Saturday marked the 21st edition of the pride run, which includes a 5K or 3K walk. While the Pride parade has been taking place since the 1970’s, the run was founded by three gay athletes in 1996. The idea is to partner the “themes of pride and remembrance with community celebration and personal achievement.”

Toronto Pride Run 2016
The pride run had 751 male finishers, 695 female finishers and 17 transgender finishers according to the race results. Kathleen Wynne, the premier of Ontario, also showed up to run. Wynne is a regular on the road running scene. She walked in the pride parade the next day and has taken part in the run in previous years.

Justin Trudeau (who was recently spotted on a run) became the first prime minister to partake in the Toronto Pride Parade on Sunday afternoon. The pride parade took place in the downtown core and featured appearances from Wynne, Trudeau and the cast of Orange is the New Black.

Patrick Burke, the director of player safety with the National Hockey League and avid runner, also made an appearance at the Toronto parade.
Pride runs are held across Canada throughout the year. The Vancouver pride run is July 24 and the National Capital Pride Run in Ottawa is Aug. 20 to name a few. Other runs, including Edmonton and Winnipeg, were great successes earlier this year.
