It has been three years since Canada’s Andre De Grasse last competed during an indoor track season. Later that year, he won his first Olympic gold medal in the men’s 200m. With the Paris Olympics less than eight months away, De Grasse plans to open his 2024 season at the end of January at the first World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting of 2024 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

De Grasse will headline the men’s 60 metres on Jan. 27–an event he has only raced twice since 2016. His personal best in the event is 6.60 seconds, set during his final year at the University of Southern California (USC) before he turned pro ahead of the Rio Olympics.

Many sprinters will use the 60m as a pre-season event for the outdoor season. The event is commonly used to develop a sprinter’s start out of the blocks and explosive power in the first 30 metres. With an earlier start than usual, De Grasse hopes to knock off the rust earlier in the year to be in premier shape for the outdoor season.

De Grasse ended his 2023 season with his best performance in the 200m since the Tokyo Olympics. De Grasse ran a season’s best 19.76 seconds to win the Diamond League Final in Eugene, Ore. This was the fourth-fastest 200m time of his career.

The 29-year-old sprinter from Markham, Ont., will again be one of the Canadian favourites to win gold in Paris. He has medalled in every Olympic event he’s ever competed in, accumulating three bronze medals, two silvers and one gold over two Olympic games. If he can defend his title in Paris, he will become the first Canadian sprinter to win back-to-back Olympic titles.

According to World Athletics, there are a total of 60 meetings currently featured on the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour calendar, including seven Gold-level events. The first of those Gold meetings is in Astana, which will be the first-ever World Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Asia.
