Athletes remember David Torrence with tribute race at Long Island Mile

The race happened yesterday in honour of David Torrence

Late last month, the running scene was shook with the tragic death of track athlete David Torrence. Torrence, an Olympian who ran for HOKA ONE ONE, was found dead at the bottom on a swimming pool on Aug. 28. He was 31 years old.

With this unexpected loss, athletes and fans of the track scene were left to deal with this sad news. As a gesture to honour the athlete, HOKA ONE ONE decided to dedicate their Long Island Mile to Torrence. The men’s elite mile has been renamed the David Torrence Mile so as to continue his legacy. Torrence was a 5,000m Olympics finalist and he claimed victory at the Long Island race twice.

We will miss him.

It took place yesterday evening. Leader of the pack, Chris O’Hare, won the mile yesterday which ran in slick and wet conditions. He ran 3:56.22 and also was vocal about dedicating that race to the America-Peruvian athlete, announcing on social media “This one’s for your D.T.”

The women’s mile winner was Emily Lipari. She took the win after running 4:28.84.

After hearing the news late last month, several Canadian elite athletes spoke out about their experiences with Torrence. See their kind words here
