Canadian Corey Bellemore lowers beer mile world record to an incredible 4:34

The second annual beer mile world classic didn’t disappoint on Sunday as Canadian Corey Bellemore set his second world record in four days. The Canadian ran 1,609 metres and drank four beers in 4:34.35. The 21-year-old, Windsor, Ont. resident burst onto the scene on Thursday when he ran 4:39.56 before flying to London for the race.

The time needs to be verified by Beermile.com in order to be listed as an official world record. It’s currently listed as pending on their website. Bellemore has taken 13 seconds off the previous world record (4:47) in the span of four days.

“He’s extremely humble about it [the record], just talking to the fans,” the organizers told Canadian Running immediately after Sunday’s race.

Sunday’s race was just Bellemore’s fourth-ever beer mile. He’s an elite middle-distance runner for the University of Windsor having run 3:43 for 1,500m and 1:47 for 800m. He ran 59 seconds for the final 400m with nearly 1.5 litres of beer in his system.

A 4:34 for a flat-out mile is quite fast as it is. Combine that with four beers and having to stop between each of the four laps makes it that much more incredible. Results for heat two of the men’s elite race can be found here.

Much of the Canadian men’s beer mile team was rocking a Brooks kit for the race. Lewis Kent, the previous world record holder, is sponsored by Brooks. Kent is also an ambassador for the national beer mile circuit and regularly competes with Amsterdam Blonde, a Toronto-based brewery. Kent finished fifth in 5:10 on Sunday.

Bellemore was wearing a team Canada kit for the race. It was the first time that a global beer mile race was held overseas and the first time it has been held on a standard 400m track.

The men’s race was so stacked that there was two heats of elite races. The first of two heats featured the slower (but still fast) beer milers. Beer two-mile world record holder Jim Finlayson was the top Canadian in the first heat. Canada also set a new world record for the beer mile relay, which involves four athletes drinking one beer and running one 400m lap each. The team of Bellemore, Kent, Jeff Mountjoy and Phil Parrot-Migas ran 4:06.

Women’s race

Canadians Anne Belanger and Lianne Girard both finished in the top-five in the women’s race. Belanger ran 6:50 to finish second to Erin O’Mara while Girard ran 7:16 for fifth.

Belanger’s time makes her the fifth fastest Canadian woman to run the four-beer, four-lap race.
