Meghan Markle prohibited from running London Marathon

Unfortunately for Markle, becoming the Duchess of Sussex might mean leaving the racing flats behind

The Suits actress turned Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, was reportedly prohibited from running the London Marathon by the British royal family.

Radar Online reported that Markle was interested in running the London Marathon to raise money for one of her favourite charities, World Vision.

When Markle’s request was disapproved for safety reasons, she allegedly suggested several alternatives, such as only completing a portion of the race in a special lane in order to potentially appease the royal rules. Despite her attempts to compromise, her request hasn’t been approved.

There have historically been a few examples of royals completing marathons, for example, Princess Beatrice who in 2015 finished the London Marathon. That being said, Markle would’ve been arguably the highest profile member of the British royal family to run a marathon.

While no royals have ever completed a marathon, there are many high profile celebrities who have safely and successfully completed races. For example, Oprah ran the Marine Crops Marathon in 1994 finishing in 4:29:20, Katie Holmes ran the New York City Marathon in 2007 in 5:29:58, Sean (P. Diddy) Combs ran the New York City Marathon in 2003 finishing in 4:14:54. Comedian Kevin Hart has also got the running bug. Hart finished the 2017 New York Marathon in 4:05:06.

President of the United States George W. Bush ran the 1993 Houston Marathon. He finished in 3:44:52. While he was a politician at the time, this race was before his presidency which began in 2001.

Pippa Middleton, sister to Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, is also a marathoner. She completed the 2015 Safaricom Marathon in Kenya in 3:56:33.

Unfortunately for Markle, becoming the Duchess of Sussex might mean leaving the racing flats behind.
