Raymond Caissie, 71, of Richibucto-Village, N.B. set a new Canadian record of 5:54 for the road mile for men in his age group on Sunday in northern New Brunswick.

Caissie took a whopping 20 seconds off the record at the Miramichi Mile race, finishing fourth overall. He said he would have been even faster, but he had run a hard 5K the previous day, and his legs were tired. (He finished second overall in that race, with a time of 19:38.)

“It feels good!” Caissie told us, about his new record. The previous record of 6:16 was set in 2017 by Barrie Dargie. Dargie still holds the 65-70 record of 5:33, which he set in 2012.

Caissie’s nearest rival is a woman named Patty Blanchard, who pushed him in the 5K, and who plans on contesting the Canadian mile record for women 60-69 at the second of two mile races hosted by the Miramichi River Runners next Sunday, August 19th.

Caissie will be back again too, trying to beat his own record. Last month Blanchard set a new record in the 1,500m for women 60-64.
