Sports Illustrated goes on the block

Media conglomerate Meredith wants a buyer for the iconic sports title by end of June

Sports Illustrated

Check your bank balances, sports fans–your favourite magazine is for sale. Meredith Corp. announced yesterday that it’s open to offers for Sports Illustrated, one of the world’s most iconic sports publications, acquired from Time Inc. just last November along with Time magazine, Money magazine and Fortune for a cool US$1.8 billion.

SI has featured on its cover many stars of the American and global running world, including Bill Rodgers, Carl Lewis, and Usain Bolt. The U.K.’s Roger Bannister, who died earlier this month, appeared in early 1955, six months after his sub-4 coup in May 1954. The June 15, 1970 cover featuring Steve Prefontaine helped rocket him to international fame. (“Pre,” as he was affectionately known in the running world, died in a car accident at age 24, cutting short a spectacularly promising middle-distance running career that included multiple American track records and a fourth-place finish in the 5,000 metres at the 1972 Olympics.)

The April 22, 2013 cover captured three Boston police officers towering over an injured runner, moments after the second of two bombs exploded near the finish line on Boylston Street seven days earlier. The photo used on the cover can be seen below.
