The most well-known family in distance running, the Ingebrigtsens, will soon be increasing in size. On Saturday, on social media, the reigning Olympic 1,500m champion, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, and his wife, Elisabeth, announced they are expecting their first child.

“New team member coming in June,” wrote Ingebrigtsen, holding up a petite racing speed suit.

It has been an eventful last 12 months for the couple, as they bought a new house in Sandes, Norway, and got married in September 2023.

Ingebrigtsen has been unable to compete since the 2023 Diamond League Final in Eugene, Ore., in mid-September, due to a nagging Achilles injury. According to Norway’s NRK, the injury started when he took some time off from running for his wedding and honeymoon in the Maldives. When he tried to start training again, the challenges began. The injury has kept him sidelined since the fall, and will keep him out of both the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow and the World XC in Belgrade in March.

The 23-year-old is coming off one of the most successful seasons of his career, winning two gold medals at the 2023 European Indoor Championships, setting world bests in the two-mile and 2,000m, and winning two Diamond League titles (one mile and 3,000m). Ingebrigten’s only setback of the season came at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, where he lost to Great Britain’s Josh Kerr in the men’s 1,500m, earning his second consecutive silver medal.

The baby’s gender has not been revealed, but according to the post, is due to arrive in June. Ingebrigtsen intends to return to the track for the 2024 Diamond League Pre-Classic in Eugene in late May, then plans on competing at the Oslo Bislett Games in June.
