University of Guelph track and field head coach under review

Head coach Dave Scott-Thomas is currently on a personal leave of absence

In response to an enquiry about the status of the track and field program at the University of Guelph, today Canadian Running received the following email from Lori Bona Hunt, Director of Integrated Communications:

Dave Scott-Thomas, the head coach of the University of Guelph’s track and field program, is currently on a personal leave of absence. Recently, the University received information from past and current track and field athletes regarding their experiences on the team. We are actively and responsibly reviewing the information received in accordance with University processes and procedures. In accordance with the University’s policies and relevant privacy legislation, the University does not comment on such matters while those processes are underway.”

The program has enjoyed a long history of success in both individual and team results on the track (indoor and outdoor) and in cross-country. The Gryphons swept the U Sports indoor championships in 2019.

Scott-Thomas has been a Team Canada head coach multiple times. A number of Canadian elites train with the Speed River Track ad Field Club, where he is also head coach. A spokesperson at Athletics Canada indicated the organization is not conducting any investigation at this time.

Hunt said the review is being conducted by an external organization.
