Jamaican sprint dynamos Fraser-Pryce, Jackson among nominees for 2022 Women’s World Athlete of the Year

Seven runners, also including American Sydney McLaughlin, made the list

On Wednesday, World Athletics (WA) announced the Women’s World Athlete of the Year nominees. These nominees were selected by an international panel of athletics journalists and council representatives from World Athletics. The shortlist of nominees features Jamaican sprint phenoms Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson, who were both anticipated to be among the finalists after their remarkable performances this year.

Track nominees

Tobi Amusan (NGR) World 100m hurdles champion, Diamond League, Commonwealth and African 100m hurdles champion. Amusan set a world 100m hurdles record of 12.12.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (JAM) World 100m champion, earning a fifth gold medal in the event. Diamond League 100m champion. Fraser–Pryce ran a world-leading 10.62 among her record seven sub-10.70 100m races of the season.

Kimberly Garcia (PER) World 20K race walk champion to win Peru’s first-ever WA Championships medal. World 35K race walk champion in a South American record to complete a race walk double. WA race walking team championships 20K bronze medallist

Shericka Jackson (JAM) World 200m champion and Diamond League 200m champion; Jackson ran a world-leading 21.45 to move up to second on the world all-time list.

Faith Kipyegon (KEN) World 1,500m champion, Diamond League 1,500m champion. Kipyegon ran a world-leading Kenyan record of 3:50.37, just three-tenths of a second off the world record.

Sydney McLaughlin (USA) World 400m hurdles and 4x400m champion. Broke the world 400m hurdles record with 51.41 at the U.S. championships and further improved the world record to 50.68 to win the world title.

Shaunae Miller-Uibo (BAH) World 400m champion, world indoor 400m champion, NACAC 400m champion.

Field athlete nominees

Yulimar Rojas (VEN) World indoor and outdoor triple jump champion. Also the Diamond League triple jump champion, Rojas improved her world record to 15.74m in Belgrade.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh (UKR) World indoor high jump champion and world high jump silver medallist, European high jump champion. Mahuchikh jumped a world-leading 2.05m, equalling the outdoor national best.

Chase Ealey (USA) World shot put champion and the world indoor shot put silver medallist. Diamond League shot put champion who threw a world-leading 20.51m in 2022.

A three-way voting process will determine the finalists. The WA Council and WA Family will cast their votes via email, while fans can vote online via the WA social media platforms on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Individual graphics for each nominee will be posted this week, and a ‘like’ on Facebook and Instagram or a retweet on Twitter will count as one vote.

The WA Council’s votes will make up 50 per cent of the result, with the WA Family’s votes and the public votes will each count for 25 per cent of the final result. Voting will conclude at midnight on Monday, Oct. 31 2022. Five women and men finalists will be announced in November before the winner is announced in December. Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah won last year’s award.
