Weekend trail update: results from Haliburton Forest, WAM and Lost Soul Ultra

On opposite ends of the country, athletes climbed mountains and ran through forests

From the Haliburton Forest Trail Races in Ont. to Whistler Alpine Meadows, in B.C., runners were toeing the rugged dirt line across the country on the weekend. Ultrarunners also conquered the unique coulees of southern Alberta in one of Canada’s only Western States qualifiers, Lost Soul Ultra. Here’s a roundup of results from a trail-packed weekend.

Haliburton Forest Trail Races

The 100-mile is the signature distance for the Haliburton Forest Trail Race, but runners also have the option to compete in 12K, 26K, 50K or 50 miles. This year’s 50-mile champion, Elias Kibreab, won the 100-mile race last year and took five hours off of Ontario’s Bruce Trail FKT in May. Similarly, on the women’s side, Joan Matthews, winner of this year’s 50-mile, also won the 100-mile last year. (The two runners are friends; Matthews paced Kibreab on the first day of his Bruce Trail run earlier this year.)
