2015 London Marathon field announced: best of all time?

kipsang kimetto london marathon

Marathon fanatics will be counting down to April 26 this year bracing themselves for what looks to be the best marathon field ever. Dennis Kimetto and Wilson Kipsang, the two fastest marathon runners of all time, will go head to head at the London Marathon.

Kimetto, 30, broke the record in Berlin on Sept. 28 running 2:02:57. Kipsang won in 2013 running 2:03:23. The 32-year-old is the London and NYC Marathon champion and Olympic bronze medal holder.

When the marathon announced its elite field early this morning, the good news came rolling in with one jaw-dropper after another. The excitement doesn’t stop at the Kimetto versus Kipsang news.

Kenenisa Bekele, 32, has been called the greatest track distance runner of all time, holding world records in the 5,000m and the 10,000m. He has three Olympic gold medallist and just got into the marathon last April, when he won the Paris Marathon in an impressive debut. But his 2:05:04 PB only ranks him ninth in the 2015 London field.

The London Marathon is packed with the absolute best this year with a record eight runners who have broken 2:05. But there’s so much hype surrounding Kimetto, Kipsang and Bekele, that those who run an impressive 2:04 marathon are the dark horse picks: Emmanuel Mutai, Eliud Kipchoge, Ayele Abshero, Sammy Kitwara, Tsegaye Mekonnen and Stanley Biwott, have all run under 2:05.
