Calgary Marathon attracts stampede of runners

A record 8,500 participants hit the roads at the Calgary Marathon races on May 31.

The HSBC Calgary Marathon distanced itself from the crowds of the Stampede, moving the race day to May 31 from the usual Stampede Week time slot in July – and instead attracted a rush of runners. A record 8,500 people took part in the full marathon, half-marathon, 10K, 5K and Tim-Bits Marathon for Kids. Calgary’s Melissa Kalyn won the women’s marathon in 3:02:39 and Predrag Mladenovic of Toronto took the men’s title in 2:30:14. In the half-marathon, Lioudmila Kortchaguina of Thornhill, Ont. won the women’s race in 1:17:42, while Victoria’s Jon Brown was the top man in 1:06:21, five minutes ahead of the next runner.
