Canadian junior 1000m record broken for the second time in nine days
The Canadian junior 1000m record has been lowered again.
Alex Bussières, of Quebec City, who ran 2:25:60 last spring to set the record, had his own mark bested less than two weeks ago on Dec. 3 by the University of Windsor’s Corey Bellemore. Bussières reclaimed the mark on Dec. 14 in Montreal, racing to a 2:23:75. Mathieu Sturkenboom ran 2:15:15, also under Bellemore’s previous record.
The race was at McGill University’s Tomlinson Fieldhouse.
The record is becoming and oft-challenged one. Jeremy Rae set it at 2:25:72 in 2009 and it has now been broken three times in 2013, and Sturkenboom also ran a time better than the previous record.
All three juniors will enter the senior ranks in the new year, joining an already strong group of young Canadian middle distance runners.
