On a warm morning in the nation’s capital, tens of thousands of runners participated in the Ottawa Marathon and Half-Marathon. In the marathon, Sunday’s marquee event and an IAAF Gold Label event, Dayna Pidhoresky and Nicholas Berrouard finished as the top Canadians.

Pidhoresky, who was targeting a spot on the IAAF World Championship team in the marathon, ran 2:36:08 to finish seventh overall in the Ottawa Marathon. Berrouard, from Shawinigan, Que., ran 2:24:38 and was ecstatic with the victory posting a personal best. He finished 23rd overall.

Kenya’s Eliud Kiptanui and Guteni Imama of Ethiopia won the overall Ottawa Marathon in 2:10:14 and 2:30:18. Imama, incredibly, ran 1:11 through the halfway point, which is 2:22 pace. She faded significantly but held on for the victory in a time that is eight minutes slower than the women’s winning time in 2016.

After the race, Pidhoresky, who trains out of Vancouver, told Canadian Running that she thinks her time may still be fast enough to qualify for the IAAF World Championships. As the top-three athletes with the eligible qualifying standard are named to Team Canada, Pidhoresky, who currently sits in fifth, would need one of the runners in front of her to withdraw their name. Lanni Marchant has confirmed that she will not run the marathon at worlds.

The qualifying period for Canadian marathoners for London 2017 ends May 31.

Pidhoresky would have needed to better Tarah Korir’s 2:35:46 to land herself, excluding Marchant, in the top-three. Sunday marked Pidhoresky’s first time running the marathon in Ottawa as she improves her lifetime best by a significant margin. Her previous best was 2:40:39 from the 2016 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

Kimba Djado Abdul Aziz was the second Canadian in the men’s race in 2:33:05. Arianne Raby, who was targeting a 2:40 performance, ran 2:41:56 and dips under the IAAF World Championships standard, 2:45, in the marathon. Raby and Abdul Aziz both live in Quebec.
