Early ghost registration for the 2013 Trek or Treat Night Trail Runs in Oakville, Ont. on Fri., Oct. 18 and Collingwood, Ont. on Sat., Oct. 19 closes one week from today on Jul. 2. Until then, runners can take advantage of discounted entry fees.

At Trek or Treat, Canada’s original night trail runs, sugar high meets runner’s high. Since 2006, runners have donned costumes and headlamps (or flashlights) to wind their way through darkened trails decorated for the Halloween season. This event is not like any other 5K! Glowing pumpkin kilometre markers and reflective skulls serve as course markers guiding runners by candy stations and through spooky graveyards. Post-race, over 5,000 pieces of candy are distributed to participants, along with free pizza, coffee and hot chocolate.

In 2013, Trek or Treat is introducing a new 5K Race category for runners expecting to complete the 5K in under 24 minutes. This will provide an unencumbered route for runners looking to set a PB or just hammer the course. In addition to the 5K Race category, there is a 5K Run/Walk that’s open to runners of all ages and abilities. The 5K Run/Walk is jogging-stroller friendly and the mostly crushed gravel trails make this an accessible race for all – even those with no trail running experience. The top three finishers in each age category receive a unique bat-themed medal and prizing is given to the top overall male and female.

Trek or Treat would also features a flagship Creepy Mile. Families are the cornerstone of this event as hundreds of parents and kids walk, jog and run their way to the finish line. Every child receives a finisher’s ribbon. Parents can come early to participate with their families in the Creepy Mile and still have enough time to return to race headquarters to participate in the 5K.

This year, race organizers have set a goal of raising 500 pounds of food to serve local food banks over the winter season. Participants are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to drop in the donation box.
