It’s not a good week for 1,500 metre champion Abeba Aregawi. Earlier this week, the Ethiopian runner who runs for Sweden was suspended for doping and now, it looks as though she hasn’t been paying her taxes in Sweden.
On Monday, Aregawi received a ban after drug tests showed banned substances in her system. This has been confirmed by the IAAF.
The 25-year-old runner represents Sweden and won gold in the 2013 world championships in the 1,500m. To add to the storm of reports accusing her of doping are allegations reported by Yahoo! Sport that she has avoided paying taxes to Sweden.
Aregawi claims that she did not actually live in Sweden which would exempt her from having to cough up the dollars. During the investigation period, she was a resident hoping to gain her citizenship however she says she never lived in the country. That is something that conflicts with her citizenship application she made in 2012.
Over the weekend (before the doping results were confirmed), Sweden’s Athletics Association said that they would still allow her to compete in competition– however a proper explanation would be due.
Right now, Sweden is claiming that the athlete owes U.S. $1,299.57 in back taxes.
