Flying Pig goes green

Races aren't always known for being environmentally friendly, but one "Pig" is working to change that.

Races aren’t always known for being environmentally friendly, but one “Pig” is working to change that.

Cincinnati’s famous Flying Pig marathon has become a green event in the past few years, and this year organizers are focusing on cutting waste, encouraging carpooling and recycling in an attempt to make the race even more environmentally friendly.

Race organizers are also encouraging runners, spectators and volunteers to help “Green the Pig,” according to the kypost.com website.

“The Flying Pig Marathon has done an outstanding job in cutting back on the amount of waste that goes to the landfill, although there is still some work to do,” the event’s website says.

Among the initiatives is paper reduction, as the race no longer prints 85,000 promotional brochures, result books or finisher certificates. All are now available online. The race also offers a “virtual goodie bag” instead of the traditional flyers and promotional material tucked into a plastic bag.
