Oldest woman to ever finish a marathon dies at 94

Harriette Thompson, who at 92 became the oldest woman to run a marathon, died at 94 on Monday morning, according to the Charlotte Observer.

The cancer survivor ran her first 42.2K at 76 and continued running marathons for an additional 16 years. She passed away in Charlotte, N.C. from “complications due to a serious fall and advanced age,” a coroner told Thompson’s family. According to NBC Charlotte, Thompson fell down a flight of stairs on Oct. 6 while delivering presents to a retirement community and was hospitalized with two hip fractures and a laceration to her head.

At 92, Thompson completed the 2015 Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon in 7:24:36. Earlier this year, at 94, Thompson completed the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Half-Marathon in less than four hours, becoming the oldest woman to ever complete a 21.1K race.

Thompson is survived by five children, according to the Observer.
