Canadians went 1-2 in the women's Spartan U.S. Series including a win by Lindsay Webster; Ryan Atkins won the men's division.

Despite the name, Canadians dominated the 2016 Spartan U.S. Championship Series.

Ontario’s Lindsay Webster and Ryan Atkins won the overall series, which featured five events held across the United States from May to the end of August. Both obstacle course racers won $7,500 for the overall win and the series was designed to seek out the best obstacle course racers in the world.

“Couldn’t be more excited to take the win for the Spartan U.S. Championship Series and bring Canada a little love,” says Webster.

The second-place finisher in the women’s race, Faye Stenning, is also Canadian and finished second in four of the five races. Calgary’s Stenning, 26, won the series’ final event (besides the upcoming world championships), The Summit, in Breckenridge, Colo. The series winner, Webster, decided to sit out the final event as she had already clinched the title thanks to sweeping the first four events.

In the men’s competition, Atkins, from Pickering, Ont., won the first three events before being disqualified in the fourth race. According to OCR Media, “Atkins was disqualified for failing the rope climb and not completing the required penalty of 30 burpees” at the Asheville, N.C. stop on tour.

By virtue of placing in the top-five in the final race, the 29-year-old was able to narrowly take the series victory.

“Overall, this was the furthest I’ve ever pushed myself in a two-hour long race; I was completely shattered at the end and I couldn’t be more proud of my performance,” Atkins said after his fifth and final Spartan Series race.

Runners earned points based on their position from each race that contributed to an overall cumulative score. Webster’s 1,200 points was a perfect score.
