The makers of the recently released running documentary Transcend have used proceeds from the film to open an academy for young Kenyan runners.

The money raised comes from those who purchased of the documentary about 2012 Boston champion Wesley Korir and his story of escaping poverty. Funds from the movie are are paying for training gear, school fees, tutoring, housing and food for the students. Right now, there are 20 students enrolled: 10 male and 10 female. January marked the beginning of their year at the school in Suwerwa, Kenya.

Michael Del Monte, creator of Transcend, says that while filming in Kenya, it seemed obvious to him and his partner, Tad Munnings, to use running talent as a way of creating sustainable futures for youth.

“While we were there, we thought ‘Why has no one used running as a vehicle to give schooling?'” he says. His hopes are that the students will use their education and training to become the next leaders of Kenya.

While at the academy, students’ experiences will be filmed and available online. Del Monte says it’s a way to keep the charity accountable. Those who purchase Transcend will be able to see snippets to understand what the money is going towards. He adds that several of the students currently enrolled are from large families. Their parents usually put most of their money towards the one child who is able to run.

“These kids are as raw as they come. For them, this is an incredible opportunity and they see that,” says Del Monte. “You’re seeing these future Boston Marathon champions from a very young age.” Students of the academy also get a chance to associate with elites so they can see where their running careers can take them.”Seeing what’s possible makes them work that much harder,” says Del Monte.

Once enrolled, they will be supported for the next four years, regardless of how much the film makes. Athletes are selected based on running ability, strong need and educational background. For most, the challenges won’t be running related: their talent for the sport is obvious. A huge focus for the school is to give them the support to keep up with academics.

Korir’s success story was obvious inspiration for the project, Del Monte says. “You see Wesley’s life and you think ‘How many other kids are like him?'”

Those interested in seeing and purchasing Transcend can get it online.
