This morning Halifax crowds got ready to witness the 2015 Blue Nose Marathon. The race which also features a youth run, 5K, 10K and half is Nova Scotia’s premier running event attracting around 10,000 fit runners each year.

The marathon course is a favourite especially among east coast runners. The course takes runners along a lovely view of the historic downtown, over to Dartmouth and back again.

This year the champions of the men’s race were Matthew White in first place running a 2:36:59 marathon. He led the pack by quite the gap. In second was Kris Taylor (2:45:00) followed by Bryan Hipson (2:46:41). White is a Dartmouth runner and apparently signed up for the marathon at the last minute. The Chronicle Herald reported today that he only entered yesterday.

The women’s race was led by polish runner Marlena Dlutek who ran a time of 3:18:09. Behind her was Mary Astle in second place. She finished the marathon minutes behind Dlutek in 3:24:27. Damara Nickerson was the third place runner of today running a time of 3:26:05.

Champions in the half were Abel Kirui of Kenya. Kirui ran a fast 1:04:03. The women’s half was won by Nova Scotia runner Sara Earle Bedford. She crossed the finish line clocking a 1:29:21.

The streets of Halifax are always taken over by the festive spirit during the Bluenose Marathon. Here’s what the race looked like today:
