NFL Scores Touchdown With 5K Races

Football and distance running couldn’t be much further apart as for as sports go, but the NFL is trying to change that by encouraging teams to host running races. The Indianapolis Colts have become the latest team to put on a 5K run.

Football and distance running couldn’t be much further apart as for as sports go, but the NFL is trying to change that by encouraging teams to host running races.

The Indianapolis Colts have become the latest team to put on a 5K run. The Aug. 24 Back to Football Run, organized by Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon promoter Competitor Group, takes place the morning of the team’s preseason home game against Cleveland, and finishes on the 50-yard line of Lucas Oil Stadium.

A post-race tailgate party will likely involve enough artery-clogging foods to undo any fitness gains from the 5K, but it’s still a noble effort for the football league to promote fitness among their fanbase.

The Colts are the 12th NFL team to join the preseason 5K circuit, with some teams spicing things up with cheerleaders and team mascots lining the final stretch of the course. NFL officials hope to have all 32 teams on board with running events by next year.

There’s no word on whether the CFL, NHL or any other Canadian sports franchises would consider a similar approach, but Hamilton’s prestigious Around the Bay Road Race already finishes inside Copps Coliseum, home of the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs.
