One Fund Boston shuts down operations

boston1The One Fund Boston, the charitable organization founded after the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013, has announced that it will be shutting down operations.

One Fund Boston was created to accept and distribute donations to help aid those affected by the bombings. The fund stopped accepting donations on December 15. In the 20 months of its existence, the fund raised almost $80 million towards aiding over 200 people.

In addition to aiding those affected by the bombings, One Fund Boston also donated one and a $500,000 to establish the One Fund Centre at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Massachusetts Eye and Ear. The centere will continue treating those who suffered traumatic brain injuries, or continue to deal with hearing problems or mental health issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, from their experience.

The money was distributed to victims based on the severity of their injuries. Victims who lost limbs or suffered permanent brain damage were given just over $2 million dollars, while those who spent a month in the hospital were given just under $1 million. An overnight visit meant a $125,000 payout, while an injury that did not require hospitalization received $8,000. With the price of health care in the United States, some victims still struggled to cover costs.
