South African runner Oscar Pistorius has been released from prison after serving 12 months of the five-year sentence he was given for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistorius, a track athlete who has competed in the Olympics and world championships shot Steenkamp through a locked bathroom door on Valentine’s Day in 2013. He said he thought he was shooting an intruder. He was convicted of manslaughter (or culpable homicide) in October 2014.

Released from his South African prison now, Pistorius will serve the four remaining years in his uncle’s mansion in Pretoria. His spokesperson has said in a recent BBC video report that his sentence is not being shortened or reduced. He will serve the four years in his uncle’s home with two major conditions being that he cannot own firearms and he must continue psychotherapy. He must also meet with Steenkamp’s family if they wish to see him.

“He knows what happened. He’s going to live with that forever,” said June Steenkamp, mother of Reeva in an interview with The Guardian. “I don’t care what happens to him. I really don’t.”
