Quinn-Smith smashes Canadian half-marathon record

The Banque Scotia 21k de Montreal on April 18 served as the Canadian half-marathon championships.

Beautiful but breezy conditions greeted the 2,800 runners who took part in the Banque Scotia 21k de Montreal on April 18 for a fast and scenic course in Parc Jean Drapeau. The race served as the Canadian half-marathon championships and the official selection event for the 2009 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. Toronto’s Tara Quinn-Smith won the women’s race and set a new Canadian half-marathon record with a 1:12:08 clocking, while Windsor, Ont.’s Matt Loiselle won the Canadian men’s title in 1:04:09, finishing 12 seconds behind overall winner Asamenew Yshanew of Ethiopia. Race favourite Jon Brown of Victoria, B.C. says he was disappointed with his 1:06:44, which was five minutes off his PB, but hopes to regain his form for the marathon at the World Championships in August.
