The Next Project

Born-again runners... they can be annoying (I know... I am one)... converting non-runners one at a time is sort of furn... especially when they think they are a lost cause and that they could never be a runner (like I once did)!

One of the things that I didn’t anticipate or expect after reaching my goal of getting fit and having my surgery was the emptiness of not having a project to focus on. For the last two years… I’ve been working towards a goal of getting in shape. Anyone that knows me well is fully aware that I always have some sort of project on the go. Now that the major milestones of “the project of me” have been met… I’m struggling with trying to find my next big project. Should I train for a 1/2 marathon? Hmmm I guess so… but the thought doesn’t excite me enough to make it “project worthy”.

I know what would interest me more… converting non-runners one at a time and help them realize they can be a runner, especially those who think they could never be a runner (like I once did)!

Over the last 6 months, a number of friends have asked me to show them how to run intervals. Missing the classroom environment, I always jump at the chance to show people what Devin taught me last year when I started to run. I’ve also started a morning running group where newbies can learn how to run intervals. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed helping others start to run and figure that I should focus on that to keep things fresh for me and at the same time to “pay it forward” (for lack of a better term).

A friend of mine, Monique mentioned a couple months ago that she wanted me to show her how to run. Summer has been busy and with her having 4 kids and me having 2, needless to say it’s hard to align our schedules so I could train her on intervals. I was excited when she called me last week and said she was going to join me for a run on Monday. I suggested the boardwalk because it’s flat and a good starting point. She wanted nothing to do with the boardwalk and suggested we meet on the trails. I warned her about the hills but this competitive chick didn’t bat an eye!

Well we ran together this morning and I’m happy to report this recent x-smoker (FYI – so proud of you for quitting Monique) ran 4km of intervals with Krista and I without barely breaking a sweat. Ok I’m embellishing the story a little bit… she did sweat… actually so did Krista and I but we all finished so that’s the main thing. We plan on going out again… so there we have it… one more down… hmmm and hopefully many more to come.
