U.S. collegiate coach runs a sub-5:00 mile for 40th consecutive year

Steve Spence, head coach at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania, has run a sub five-minute mile for 40 straight years.

World championship bronze medallist Steve Spence began his 40-year streak of sub-5:00 miles when he was 14.

Steve Spence, head coach of the cross-country program and assistant coach with the track and field team at the Pennsylvania-based institution, broke the five-minute barrier for the mile for the 40th consecutive year running 4:55:52.

The 1991 bronze medallist in the marathon at the IAAF world championships began his 40-year streak when he was 14. Spence finished 12th in the marathon at the Olympic Games the following year in Barcelona.

Spence, 53, is the father of Neely Spence Gracey, a sub 70-minute half-marathoner and elite distance runner.
