Sporting Life 10K raises $2 million

Toronto’s Sporting Life 10K, the city’s largest road race, saw over 28,000 runners race down the main north-south thoroughfare. The women’s race was won by Toronto’s Tamara Jewett in 33:32. Ethiopian Berhanu Degefa won the men’s race in 29:46.

The race raised $2 million for Camp Oochigeas.

Gebrselassie retires

After finishing the Great Manchester Run, Haile Gebrselassie announced he would retire from professional racing. The 42-year-old Ethiopian is one of the greatest distance runners of all time, on and off the track. He won four consecutive world championship 10,000m races and at points held world records in the 5,000m, 10,000m and marathon.

Stephen Sambu won the men’s race in 27:30. Betsy Saina won the women’s race in 31:49. Both are Kenyan runners who had strong careers in the NCAA.

Kelly Wiebe and Laura Batterink win national 10,000m titles

The national 10,000m championships were held in London, Ont., but didn’t see a lot of interest from many of the country’s top runners at the distance. Kelly Wiebe won the men’s race in 28:58.90 and Laura Betterink won the women’s race in 33:58.77.
