Some big events over the weekend, starting with a world record:

Florence Kiplagat breaks own half-marathon world record

One year later, the Kenyan distance star broke her own half-marathon world record by three seconds. Kiplagat ran 1:05:09 at the Mitja Maratóo de Barcelona to break the record she set at the same race one year ago.

Millrose lives up to expectations

In a very fast mile, Matt Centrowitz won his second Wanamaker Mile title in 3:51.35. He won his first in 2011. Coming fourth was 40-year-old Bernard Lagat, shattering the previous 40+ world record over the distance, though not to the surprise of many.

Canadians also performed well in New York City. Calgary’s Jessica O’Connell finished fifth in the 3,000m, running 8:53:09. Jenna Westaway, also of Calgary, ran 2:02:91 in the 800m to finish third.

Canadian sets half-marathon master world record

Vancouver runner Betty Jean McHugh ran 2:43:30 in the ‘First Half’ race to break the existing world record by over 30 minutes.
